Shirley's obituary

Shirley Jean McCall White was born July 26, 1948, in Biltmore, North Carolina, to William Cleon McCall, Jr. and Shirley Marie (Gravett) McCall. She and her nine siblings grew up in Orange, Texas where she graduated from Little Cypress High School. After earning a degree from then Lamar College, Jean returned to Little Cypress where she taught several of her siblings. She married Joseph White of Moss Point, Mississippi, on June 16, 1972, in Orange.

Jean had a long career as a teacher in several states. She loved kids, especially middle schoolers. After retiring from teaching, Jean took on a second career as a math tutor and center co-director at Mathnasium in Houston, Texas.

Jean loved to sew, embroider, crochet, weave baskets, make bows, and really anything that involved crafting. She was well loved for her afghans and crocheted pot holders. Her great passion was teaching women’s Bible studies at The Met in Houston. She loved spending time in God’s Word and was a vigilant prayer warrior.

Jean successfully battled cancer in 2013 and 2014. The cancer returned and her earthly sojourn ended on December 17, 2018, after a short stay at a hospice facility in Conroe, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Caroline Patricia Willingham.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph White; daughter, Dawn (Mike) Savage, son, Duane (Crystal) White; son, Daryl (Emily) White; grandchildren Kaitlyn, Justin, Ashley, Christian, Ethan, Aubrey, Levi, and Naomi; eight siblings and their spouses; numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews; and adored friends near and far.
