Shirley's obituary
The eldest of 5 children, Shirley was born in Phoenix AZ, on October 23rd 1926, to Charles and Opal Spurling. Helping to tend and care for her younger siblings, she developed a mother’s heart at a very young age.
At just 16 Shirley met and married her best friend and eternal partner Phil Brown. The two loved each other deeply and worked long hard days making a life together on the family farm. Through the years they had 15 children, 98 grandchildren, hundreds of great great grandchildren, and loved countless others as their own. Shirley’s family was the center of her world and her home was a place where heaven and earth often met. It was a place of comfort and warmth with amazing home cooked meals and delicious desserts.
Shirley enjoyed painting ceramics, putting together puzzles, and playing card games. She had a gift for finding the good in every situation. She had a fun loving and spunky attitude that brought laughter and joy to those around her. She loved her Savior Jesus Christ and faithfully followed his call to serve others. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints she served in many capacities in the Primary, Young Women's, and Relief Society. She also served along side her husband as a missionary to the people of Uruguay, as well as to the Native American people of the Pima Maricopa Indian Community. Both at home and at church Shirley’s service put into effect an endless ripple of goodness. Her life consisted of hard work with gentle hands, and a loving heart.
Shirley is survived by her brothers Chuck, Leroy, and Dewitt and by her children: Judy Lisonbee (Bob), Joan Bradshaw (Gary), Janet Young (Var), Barry, Joyce Winder (Wayne), Jean, Don (Annette), Jennie Hatch (Alex), Carl (Eleisa), June White (Bill), Jill Stout (Dean), Jackie Thompson (Mike), and Jody Gonzales (Donny) Shirley is proceeded in death by her husband of 76 years Phil, sister Ruth, son Flint (Debbie) and daughter Julia.
Services will be held this Saturday October 24th, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Lehi Stake Center located at 1430 N. Grand, Mesa, AZ at 10:30 am. A link for the live stream will be added for those unable to attend. There will be a viewing at the same address on Friday October 23rd from 6-8pm. Flowers may be sent to Angels Burial 422 W. McLellan Rd, Mesa, AZ 85201. All are welcome to come and celebrate a life well lived.
