Shirley's obituary
Shirley was born on October 11, 1946 in Hot Springs, SD to Carl Reese Sikes and Nettie Elizabeth Bartlett. She attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD and, on July 13, 1967, she married Marvin Duane Owens. They adopted one daughter, Candice “Candy” Lynn Owens, before eventually divorcing. While living in Casper, WY, she was a hardworking mail carrier for years and held various jobs, often two at a time, until she became a realtor in 1991. She retired and escaped snowy winters by moving to Mesquite, NV in August of 2019.
In her youth, Shirley was a barrel racer and she watched rodeos her entire life. These passions, together with being related to Old West gambler and outlaw, Poker Alice, may have contributed to her enduring love of westerns. She enjoyed gardening, dancing cheek-to-cheek, reading about Wyoming history, watching true crime and police dramas, and travelling to Las Vegas to see shows. She really liked Carrot Top. She once had an entire room filled with Denver Broncos paraphernalia. She loved three P’s: purple, potatoes (mashed), and pugs. The ashes of her precious pugs Taz and Turbo will be mixed with hers, as she requested, along with the ashes of her rope, which was cremated with her. She could wiggle her ears. She couldn’t sing a note, or so she claimed. She wore a remarkable amount of paisley and tie-dye for someone who was never a hippie. She said “bless your heart” with complete sincerity. She loved with abandon, giving Elizabeth Taylor a run for her money in the marriage department, and took away something good from each relationship. Her marriage to Larry E. Lee, in particular, gave her a wonderful stepfamily that she treasured and called her own long after the divorce and for the rest of her days. She could be maddeningly stubborn. Everyone who met her commented on how sweet she was. She cracked jokes until the end.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered for brightening the lives of her family and friends. In addition to her daughter Candice and sister, Lucille Wilson, she is survived by stepson and daughter-in-law David and Carrie Lee, grandson Austin Lee, granddaughter and grandson-in-law Aubree and Joe Richardson, and great-granddaughters Kaydence and Ryland Richardson, her best friend Mary Moore, as well as a host of friends and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carl, her mother, Nettie, her brother, Wayne Sikes, her sister, Emma Lea Lashen, and her dear friend, Jane Bargeron, whom she always referred to as “Miss Jane.”
Shirley’s wish was for her ashes to be scattered on a field of wild flowers on Casper Mountain in Wyoming following her celebration of life ceremony. She also requested that there be a separate ceremony in Mesquite, Nevada, as she didn’t want her friends to have to travel. She asked that all attendees wear purple, or cheerful colors. Due to health concerns, her family has chosen not to schedule either ceremony until such time that it is safe for everyone to attend.
