Shirley's obituary

Shirley Gruber Firestein

November 22, 1925 – April 16, 2026

Shirley Gruber Firestein, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at the age of 100.

Born on November 22, 1925, Shirley lived a full and vibrant life defined by her intellect, warmth, and unwavering dedication to her family. She pursued her passion for helping others through her education at Hunter College and later earned her master’s degree from Columbia University, building a meaningful career as a social worker. Her work touched countless lives, reflecting her deep empathy, sharp insight, and genuine care for people.

Shirley was married to her beloved husband, Harry Firestein, with whom she built a strong and loving family until his passing. Later in life, she shared many happy years with her longtime partner, Harold Nitowsky.

She was the proud mother of four children—David, Netsy, Marcia, and Ben—and her legacy continues through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of pride and joy.

Shirley was truly a force to be reckoned with. She possessed a remarkable presence—strong, engaging, and endlessly curious. She loved being social, meeting new people, and forming lasting connections wherever she went. Above all, family was at the center of her world. She was the beacon of her family—offering guidance, strength, and unconditional love—and her impact will be felt for generations.

Shirley will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who knew her.
