Shirley's obituary
Shirley Anne Hines, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and lifelong lover of books, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, in Sacramento, California, at the age of 88.
Shirley was born January 13, 1936, on a farm near Griswold, Iowa, to John and Edna Shultz. She earned her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1957 and went on to complete her master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1981. Shirley dedicated her career to education, working as both a high school English teacher and a public librarian. Her final job before retirement was as a librarian at Sacramento City College. Her passion for teaching continued into retirement as she taught courses to her peers through The Renaissance Society of Sacramento.
Shirley married Norman Hines, an artist and college art teacher, in 1957. Norm died unexpectedly in 1999. Together, they raised three children in Burlington, IA and then Eureka, IL – William (who preceded her in death), Lisa, and Allison. Shirley and Norm moved to Sacramento, CA in 1989.
Shirley had a passion for travel which led to many adventures through-out Europe, Central America and Asia. She and Norm even spent a year in Fularji, China in 1983 teaching English and Art. Shirley’s other interests included being an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction, daily acrostic crossword puzzles, and lots of walking. She was a yoga practitioner with decades of practice, and throughout her adult life, Shirley was very involved in the Unitarian Universalist Church.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Lisa Hines Berg of East Lansing, MI (Peter Berg), Allison Hines of Sacramento, CA, her daughter-in-law Edith Dominguez Hines of Dixon, CA (William), her sister, Virginia Snyder of Phoenix, AZ, and her five grandchildren.
A family memorial service will be held in early January. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Sacramento Library in her memory: https://saclibfriends.org/don…
