Shirley's obituary

Shirley A Jones went to Heaven on February 17, 2025. At age 91 she crossed over peacefully at her home in NC, with her son, Gary and daughter in law Sue by her side. She was formally from Waterford, CT

Shirley was the beloved daughter of Irving and Mary, she was born in New London CT in 1934.

Shirley was a kind-hearted, sweet, loving woman. She was a sister, wife, aunt, mom, nana, great nana, friend, etc .

Shirley went to Jordan School, she then went on to attend Chapman Tech. She became co-captain of her high school cheerleading squad. Shirley played guitar, where she and two of her friends received third place in a local talent contest. In high school she was elected for the Girl's All State Government High School Program, which was a high honor. She also made several prom dresses for herself and her sister Pat. Sewing became a hobby she thoroughly enjoyed throughout her life.

Shirley graduated from Chapman Tech High School, which became New London High School the year she graduated. After graduating she attended Mitchell College. She went on to become a happy and valuable employee, for The Dow Chemical Company, as a switch board operator.

Shirley believed that friendships made are friendships kept. She maintained these close relationships, they enjoyed planning and attending their high school class reunions. Some of those friends she has now rejoined in Heaven.

Shirley married her beloved Elmer, they were married for 57 years before his passing. Shirley and her husband Elmer (Jonesy) enjoyed spending time traveling in the United States, visiting places where he had served in the Navy. Shirley was very proud of all his accomplishments.

As a mom, she loved being there to watch and support her children during games, concerts, and special events. She also volunteered as a cub scout leader. Family and friends also knew she was someone that they could always count on. Later, Shirley became a nana of five grandchildren, she had an active role in their lives, sharing in their special events and milestones. Shirley's love and support shined through.

Shirley's faith was a tremendous part of her life. She was a faithful member of St. Paul's Church in Waterford. She participated in many activities there.

Shirley happily greeted customers while working at The Silver Skate Christmas Shop. She always found joy in sharing the season with others.

She volunteered at Garde Theater as an usher. She loved music and plays so this was perfect for her. Shirley was a woman that loved to socialize, being a volunteer at the Waterford Senior Center gave her that opportunity. She greeted everyone with a smile as they came in and enjoyed being able to assist them. She enjoyed being a volunteer there .

Throughout the years, she helped make quilts, which were then given out to comfort children.

Shirley was honored to be awarded volunteer of the Year in 2016 at the Waterford Senior Center. This was a wonderful honor and we were all proud of her. Shirley was involved in many things throughout her life, she was always very inquisitive and eager to learn more.

Family and friends were always most important to Shirley. She would send words of encouragement, comfort, etc. through cards and letters making sure you knew she cared.

Some of Shirley's hobbies were working in her yard, going to concerts, shows, parades, and being a part of family picnics, or any other celebrations. She loved being with everyone.

She loved the park, enjoyed watching the boats float by, seeing the birds and listening to them, or the squirrels running from branch to branch. She enjoyed when the dogs would stop and she was able to pet them. We would also occasionally see dolphins.

Listening to outdoor concerts, attending shows, seeing the beautiful Christmas tree lights, relaxing at the pond to watch the ducks, turtles and geese as well as just sitting outside watching the clouds, these were some of her other favorite things she enjoyed.

Sunday mornings, were days she also looked forward to, she loved going to church. She said everyone was so welcoming. She enjoyed hearing beautiful music, great services and eating her breakfast there.

Loved ones that will cherish her memories are her son, Gary and daughter in law Sue in NC. Granddaughter - Ashley, grandsons - Jesse, Matthew, Mark, Michael and wife Laura, great-granddaughter - Serena, sister Patricia and brother in law Jack, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Pre-deceased by her loving parents Irving and Mary, beloved husband, Elmer and son Kenneth.

One of the last things she said was “tell everyone I love them". She wanted to make sure we all knew that.

We were blessed to have been her caregivers throughout these years. We want to extend our gratitude to the team at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare who made it possible for Shirley to be home with family during her journey to Heaven.

Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to each of them. Through the expertise compassion, empathy, kindness, support, etc. that was given, they provided for Shirley's physical needs, and also for the emotional and spiritual needs of her and us. We are thankful to have had the same nurses, Darcey and Jennifer, as well as social worker Robin, which made it less confusing for her. They were all a God send. Thank you to all who were involved in her care.

We have had a very special bond and although she is gone physically the bond we share will always be there.

Eternal life is hers.

Until we see her again, we will hold her in our hearts and memories forever
