Sherwood's obituary

7/14/23

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Sherwood P. Starbird Jr. in Ft Pierce, FL.  Sherwood passed away at home on July 8th, 2023, at 12:39PM

Sherwood was born in Vero Beach FL, October 28th, 1939, and was raised in Apopka FL.

After graduating from Apopka High School, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy and remained a believer in his great country to the end. During his Naval career,  he was a torpedoman on the USS Everglade, USS Vesole, and was aboard the USS Nautilus when it was the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole on August 3rd 1958.

His career after the Navy took him in several directions.  Electrician, Icehouse/Fish House Manager, Fisherman, and Refrigeration.  He went into the family business and opened a Sawmill in Ft Pierce, where he was active in the Agricultural Community.  A constant for the St Lucie County Fair, he donated sawdust for the stalls, lumber for repairs and new builds alike.  Once retired from the sawmill, Sherwood continued to work in various start-up projects and miscellaneous jobs.  He proved himself as a “Jack of all trades and Master of Many”.

Sherwood leaves behind his Wife and constant companion for the last 50+ years, Diane Waters-Starbird, His sisters, Sandy Avrett and Susan Wissman, 6 children, Sherwood Starbird III & wife, Kimberly Starbird, Marchell Miller & husband, Rick Miller, Paul Starbird, Thomas Rose, Charles Waters & wife, Meghan Waters, Sherri Starbird & husband, Dave Sujdak and daughter-in-law Tawny Rose. As well as 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherwood Sr & Lucille Starbird, siblings Rea Andrews, Shirley DuBois, and Stephen Starbird and son Rick Rose.

We will celebrate his life on August 20th at 11am.  Services will be held at Haisley-Hobs Funeral home on Okeechobee Rd in Ft Pierce FL, with his favorite, BBQ, to be served at the reception afterwards.

We look forward to sharing & hearing the stories about Sherwood and to be able to laugh over his antics throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers,  please make a donation to Hospice House in Ft. Pierce, who's team was instrumental in ensuring that Dad was as comfortable as possible in the end.
