Shelby's obituary

Private Shelby Shirrell (Mefford) passed away peacefully surrounded by family at her home on 01/13/2022. Shelby was a female veteran who served in the the 1960s and spent another 2 years in in the US Army. This was the most she could do at that time and was honorably discharged. She was in communications and had many friends as she was such a bright and kind person.

Shelby was born on may 2nd 1940 in Batesville; ark. to her parents, Josh Shirrell and Sara Shirrell. When she was just just 6 she was already working with the family in the fields of cotton. She] wanted to join the army and serve her country to help her fellow Americans in times as turbulent as they were then. She would go on to serve her duty in communications as women were very limited in their fields at the time. She looked up to her uncle.who was on the beaches on D day and made it through the he that was Normandy. She made him proud by serving as a woman when it was almost frowned upon in that Era.

After serving, She returned to Arkansas and chipped in to her family working at White Rodgers in Batesville. . During her years trying to help her family; she met and soon married
in 1972, a former Airforce MP Robert Mefford and moved to Bridgeport; WA where he worked for the corps of engineers at the Chief Joseph Dam.

After moving to Bridgeport she also started working at the chief Joseph Dam for thr Coprps of Engeneers. She worked there for many years.

When not working she was dedicated to her family and children.

Shelby was predeceased by her mother and father as well.as her sister and husband whom had died of a brain inurism . She is survived by her 2 sons and their families as well as her older Brother John E Shirrell.

She never asked for much and only wanted to be cremated and her ashes placed where her parents were buried in Arkansas. I plan on taking her ashes there.as soon as all her affairs are resolved.
