Background
Had Sharon been given the opportunity to express a last wish, it would be that her sons, Dylan and DJ, would always be cared for, particularly DJ, with his special needs.
DJ is a caring and intelligent 31-year-old man, but he faces significant challenges. He is legally blind and has physical limitations caused by a Traumatic Brain Injury due to a tumor when he was 2 years old. DJ has Asperger’s Syndrome and epilepsy, and suffers from episodes of anxiety, depression, and other medical needs. He is unable to live independently and relied heavily upon his mother for daily care.
Now that Sharon is gone, there is a void in DJ’s life. While his father Dan is doing everything he can to care for him, the ultimate goal is for DJ to gain independence in his daily life. An assistance dog can make that goal a reality.
An assistance dog would be DJ’s full-time companion, prompting and helping him to not feel overwhelmed as he navigates even the most basic tasks. It would be trained to provide emotional support during anxious and uncertain times and could quite literally save his life. Whether out walking, crossing roads or reaching for unsafe objects (such as a hot pan on the stove), DJ’s inability to recognize dangerous situations is where an assistance dog would step in, warning him and others of any potential danger. Not only this, but an assistance dog would be able to assist in the event of a seizure by alerting others and breaking his fall/lying next to him to avoid any injury during the seizure and provide comfort.
Sharon’s dream was that an assistance dog would help DJ manage current and future challenges with which he will be faced. With Sharon’s passing, we would like to make this dream come true for her.
All donations will solely be used to support DJ’s personal care needs, specifically to fund the expense of training an assistance dog.
While the average value of a fully trained assistance dog is $100,000, each client is asked to help fundraise a minimum of $10,000 to contribute. DJ is currently in the application process for an assistance dog and his fundraising goal is $10,000.
DJ has always had a real love for animals, especially dogs. They bring him immense joy and a smile that could light up any room. An assistance dog would be absolutely life changing for him, allowing him to have greater participation in family and community life and increasing his independence.
Any donation towards funding DJ’s goal of obtaining an assistance dog would be so greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to remember Sharon and consider helping DJ. Contribute
