Today is Dec 28, 2018. Dec 14, Sharon would have been 69!! Happy Birthday in heaven. So glad we shared this journey together.

I’ve just had the courage to write a brief message about COL(RET) Sharon I Richie!! I do not want to say goodbye!! This message seems too final!! COL Richie, Dr Sharon or just Sharon as I would juggle her titles in our conversations, was, to me, a great and beloved leader, mentor and friend!! She always looked out for my best interest, and the interests of others. She included me in her life as a special friend. I am thankful. I use to laugh and say to her “ I’m not sure why you want me to run in your circles......etc”. She just chuckled and gave me that down to earth, humble word of wisdom she had a special way of doing!!! It was my way of complimenting her and yet letting her know how much I admired and respected her!! She knew that until her last day on the earth.

I initially worked, indirectly, with her when she was the Chief Nurse over US Army Recruiting Command, based out of Chicago. Her mentorship and heartfelt desire to see others succeed was evident. She imparted so much wisdom and guidance. But more than what she said, she led by what she did. She was a great professional example of leadership, handled with loving care, grace and elegance. You wanted to be your best because she always demonstrated her desire to be her best!! How
fortunate I felt to be in her company. I was the Brigade Staff Officer at 2d Recruiting Brigade in Atlanta, Ga. From that job ( our first meeting—although her reputation preceded her) to every other job I had ( as I retired and even after retirement) we maintained our special friendship.

From 1994-1997 she was my Chief Nurse for a period of time at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, in Ft Gordon, Ga. When I was selected for promotion to Colonel along with one other AN, she bought both of us flowers and wrote a most beautiful and encouraging card which I still have today. When she was planning her retirement dinner, she wanted me to work with some very capable NCOs to help pull off a great celebration. I/we did not disappoint, although the concept of what she wanted was expressly verbalized to us( by her). She was very excited. We made her happy and had a great time!!

When I retired in 2007, I asked her to be the main MC at my Retirement Dinner. She was there and brought 4 other high ranking individuals in her special entourage!! She knew how to recruit some of the best!!😘. It made for a wonderful farewell.

I could go on and on. But I’ll stop now. As I know I will remember and continue to remember the positive impact of DR, COL , AN extraordinaire, Sharon I Richie in my life and my career!! I’ll visit this memorial often. Her picture reminds me of this beautiful woman who loved life, navigated it well, and used her knowledge, wisdom, successes and failures to help others. She loved her family, friends and her daughter Cynthia deeply!!

Beloved! “ Ever loved” and terribly missed. She’d always say “ we have a lifetime to see each other”. We visited frequently over the years. I am glad. We talked often- even the week leading up to her passing.

Well now we have until eternity to see each other again!!

May the life you live speak for you!! No matter the ups, downs, joys or sadness— May we remember you as the one who was victorious; often turning lemons into lemonade. You were the eternal optimist.

Even faced with a serious illness you encouraged and guided others!!

So, may the Angels escort you into the very presence of God. And may He continue to have work for you to do. Because your body gave in but your spirit NEVER DID!!!

LOVE YOU LIKE A SISTER!!

One of the challenges of Nationals is that you are in awe of your fellow candidates. What they have accomplished at such an early age. Sharon fascinated me from the start because I had never know anyone who was in the military (I was born and raised in the Caribbean) so even from the beginning I was peppering her with questions. What came out then was her love for army nurses. Learnt all about how the medical side of the military works from her and when ever we had a military speaker or when on military trips that year she was my guide. I made a bee line to sit next to her so I could whisper questions. There is a picture Sharon has of her talk to one of our speakers and the picture shows how at ease she was talking to prominent people and bonding with them. I love the picture of her you have chosen it captures her spirit..
