Sharin's obituary
Sharin Alpert of Shelburne Falls, 73, passed away peacefully on March 26 following a sudden illness. A lifetime resident of western Massachusetts, she loved nature, walking in the woods or in town, reading, her sweet community, music, gardening, and her family, friends, colleagues, and cats.
An advocate for peace and justice, Sharin was a cofounder of Racial Justice Rising and the Reparations Collective, both based in Greenfield, and a participant in other progressive causes. She had been employed at the Arms Library in Shelburne Falls, and in Greenefield, the Resilience Center of Franklin County (formerly NELCWIT), and the Franklin County Community Development Corporation. In recent years she found community, purpose, and companionship with her affinity group, the West County Climate Circle.
She leaves her partner of four decades, George Esworthy, and three stepchildren, Casey Esworthy and his wife, Elina Galperin, of Brooklyn NY; Caitlin Esworthy Greene and her husband, Ari Robbins Greene, of Seattle WA; and Dylan Esworthy, of Amsterdam, Netherlands. She is also survived by her brother, Arnie Alpert, and his wife, Judy Elliott, of Canterbury NH, and four beloved grandchildren.
The daughter of Earl and Frieda Alpert, Sharin was born in Springfield in 1952. After completing high school in Longmeadow, she lived for several years in the Berkshires before moving to the Connecticut Valley region, later settling in Shelburne Falls.
A memorial gathering will be arranged in the spring.
Donations in her memory may be made to any of the organizations mentioned above, or the cause of your choice.
