Background

Our daughter Shannon brought so much love, laughter, and light into our lives. Losing her has been heartbreaking, but the kindness and support from friends and family have helped carry us through.
Many people have asked how they can honor Shannon’s memory, and we felt that supporting causes focused on addiction awareness, treatment, and recovery is a meaningful way to help others who are facing similar struggles.
Thank you for remembering Shannon and for standing with our family.

Frequently asked questions

Answered by a team member at Shatterproof

  • What is your mission?

To create a Shatterproof world, where addiction never defines or ends a life, by transforming systems for tomorrow, supporting humans today, and ending stigma forever.

  • How are donations used?

Your donations directly work to ensure that every American with a substance use disorder has access to treatment that’s based on proven research. Because better addiction treatment means more lives saved. It’s that simple.

Every dollar you donate is carefully used to support key initiatives, which will have a big impact on preventing overdose deaths and promoting long-term recovery.

  • What progress has been made already thanks to your donors?

Here are some of the reasons this cause is meaningful:

This year, Shatterproof connected more than 96,000 people to high-quality, science-based care.

Shatterproof trained 3,800 providers across the country through their Provider Pathways program, aiming to reduce stigma, improve care, and ensure dignity and respect for those with substance use disorder.

Shatterproof reached thirty million people with anti-stigma messages.

  • What is the history of your organization?

Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2012 by Gary Mendell, who lost his son Brian to addiction in 2011. The organization is dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the United States by providing evidence-based resources and solutions, advocating for policy change, fostering a community of families, and working to end the stigma of addiction.
Shatterproof's mission is to empower and support communities, break down addiction-related stigma, and provide families with evidence-based resources to support prevention, treatment, and recovery. The organization has made significant strides in changing public opinion and treatment laws, and it continues to advocate for changes in policy at the federal and state levels.
