Scott's obituary

Scott David Surrette, 47, died unexpectedly on Oct. 5, 2020, at his home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Scott was born on Dec. 5, 1972, and grew up in Amesbury, Massachusetts, graduating from Amesbury High School in 1990. He was the son of Deborah Surrette, who died on July 4, 2017.

After several years in Vermont, he moved to Florida, where he spent two decades as a well-regarded chef, a job he poured his heart and soul into.

“Chef Mel” was an avid Grateful Dead and Phish fan who attended countless concerts. His favorite place to travel was Las Vegas, where he often attended food shows to get new ideas for the dishes he loved creating.

Scott is survived by his sisters, Ann Reily and her husband, Jim, of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Jill Searl and her husband, Karl, of Newmarket, New Hampshire, and their children, Lylah and Cameron.

Contributions in memory of Scott can be made to the American Heart Association.
