Elaine, I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad. I will remember him especially the way he was in Barcelona: sunny and smiling and someone who genuinely enjoyed connecting with people.

I first met Schon in 1994 or 1995 after Elaine and I started dating in college when we were both very young. Before we were married, he always treated me with kindness and generosity and treated me like family without hesitation. I was always surprised by that because I felt like this was something that was supposed to be earned, and I did not think I had done enough to earn that status yet. I came to know him better over the years of course, and just like all family members, I learned his best traits but also some of his faults and imperfections. There were many good times and memorable moments that I will treasure in our relationship as family members. There were also times when I did not understand why he made certain decisions, when I disagreed with him, and times I wish we had communicated with each other better. But I always loved him like a family member, even after Elaine and I were no longer together as a couple. And I will always cherish our relationship and appreciate his embrace of me into his family even when I did not think I had earned it yet.

One of my favorite memories and mental images of Schon is from our combined family trip to Barcelona. The Catalonians were protesting/demonstrating against the Spanish courts' refusal to recognize their referendum to be independent from Spain. Schon likened their cause to Taiwan's independence from China and, as we walked through the crowds of demonstrators, asked one to put the Catalonian flag on him. Whenever I picture him with the Catalonian flag draped across his shoulders, I smile, because I think it captures his spirit so perfectly.

I will always remember Schon as kind, fun-loving, generous, and happy. I got to know him through many Thanksgivings, Barcelona, and other outings. Of all my friends' parents, I knew him the most. He came to my dance recital because he wanted to support me. He kindly offered me a bag of avocados during the pandemic--sadly, when I went to pick them up, he was nowhere in sight, due to the nature of the pandemic, so I could not talk to him. I wish I had said goodbye to him when I had the chance. May he rest in peace.
