Sarah's obituary
Sarah Miller May 19, 1944 – June 2, 2025
Artist, activist, writer, islander, and beloved Granny, Sarah passed away peacefully in Toronto at 81.
Born in Wellsville, NY, she made Ward’s Island home for over 50 years. Fiercely intelligent and deeply principled, Sarah dedicated her life to creativity, community, and environmental justice.
A longtime advocate at the Canadian Environmental Law Association, she helped shape landmark initiatives including Ontario’s Toxic Reduction Act. In 2016, she received the Public Health Champion Award.
She was a founding force behind the Island Land Trust and a tireless volunteer for her cherished Island community.
Sarah is lovingly remembered by her daughter Kali (Andrew), granddaughter Lucy, and stepchildren Maryrose (Ross), Robert (Christie), and Emily (David), grandchildren James (Melissa), Chloe (Jon), Rachel, Riley, Rebecca, Jonathan, great-grandchildren William, Daisy, and Eloise, brother Bob “Beebs” Miller, and many dear friends and extended family.
A celebration of Sarah’s life will be held Sunday, July 27, 1–4 p.m. at Shaw House, Ward’s Island.
Gratitude to the Pine Villa staff for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made towards a tree planting on Toronto Island (and possibly a bench) in Sarah’s memory at https://gofund.me/0d59be01.&n…
