Sarah's obituary
Sarah "Sally" Hodge, 75, of Akron, OH, passed away on January 20, 2022 after a fight with vascular dementia after suffering a stroke in 2014.
Sarah was born on July 30, 1946 to Mary Louise Adlard and Hermon Fenton Woodworth in Macedonia, OH. After graduating from Nordonia High School in 1964 she went on to earn a BA in Education at Adrian College, studied a Semester at Sea at Chapman University and completed her education later in life by earning her MS in Education from the University of Akron. Following in her parents footsteps, Sally made her career as a teacher. Spending over 40 years and about 38 years at the same school teaching Kindergarten. She loved her job, helping people both inside and outside the classroom was her passion. There was not a school year that went by that she didn’t help families in need by either bringing supplies from home or paying out of her own pocket. She designed her own curriculum boxes for students so they could go at their own pace and have personalized instruction. Her favorite shop was the teacher supply store constantly trying to tweak and make her system better. Her other passions were mentoring teaching assistants and representing her coworkers in the local teachers union the Akron Education Association. She often took her 2 daughters to countless union mtgs and picket lines. She was a short round woman who was very nice and sweet, but mess with teacher’s pay or hours and watch out! She could go toe to toe with the best of the them arguing her point so much you would rather back down then have her keep going. She was a fun mom, but quite the disciplinarian. Laughed super loud. Wicked sarcastic sense of humor. Unapologetic for knowing and telling you what she wanted. She was adventurous and loved trying new things except when it came to food (salt in both shakers). We will miss her greatly. Sarah was predeceased by her mother and father as well as her oldest brother Walter. She is survived by her brother Alfred, daughters Mary and Felecia, and grandsons Stacie and Fredrick. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Akron Community Foundation under the Fund name: Friends of Akron Public Schools Endowment Fund (www.akroncf.org) There will be a celebration of life held at 2pm on May 14, 2022 at Sally's beloved McEbright Elementary School (349 Cole Ave., Akron, OH), where she spent a majority of her 40+ years teaching.
