Sara's obituary
Sara (aka Zehra) Birgün Ersöz, 64, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away on January 19, 2026. Born on February 7, 1961, in Lansing, Michigan, and raised abroad in Turkey, Sara lived a life defined by compassion, curiosity, playful humor, tenacity, and an unshakable generosity of spirit.
The daughter of the late Dr. John (aka Şeref) Nezihi Ersöz and Melahat Akbay, Sara came of age within an extensive family that valued learning, empathy, and service—principles she carried through every chapter of her life, sharply focused on humanitarianism. An accomplished and proud U.S. Army veteran, Sara served her country with dedication before devoting her career to mental health, where she touched even more lives as a trusted professional. She was also a lifelong, ardent caregiver, to friends, family and strangers alike. Her gentleness and understanding made her a cornerstone of hope and healing for those around her.
Sara’s love for life was boundless. Whether dancing across your living room, traveling, exploring her own corner of the world, or cooking meals that drew family and friends together, she could infuse any moment with warmth and laughter. Vibrant and free-spirited, she exuded a presence that was infectious and an openness that invited connection wherever she went.
Deeply devoted to congregation and to uplifting others, Sara found meaning in service, friendship, and faith. She is survived by her partner, Dr. Christopher Ahma Ike; her sons, Devon Crosbie, Jr. and Kurt Crosbie; her siblings Suzanne Ersoz, Kathryn Ersoz, John Ersoz, Jr., and Nilgün Çağlayan; and her grandson Wakhan Crosbie. Also survived by the father of her children, Devon Crosbie, Sr., of Jacksonville, FL. She was preceded in death by her cherished parents.
Sara’s legacy lives on in the love she gave, the lives she brightened, and the communities she strengthened. May she find the eternal peace she so gracefully sought to share with others.
