Sandra's obituary

Sandra Metzger

Absent from the body present with the Lord. On Sunday morning December 4, 2022 Sandra Metzger passed away peacefully at her home in Pleasanton, Texas.

Sandra was born in Mission, Texas on February 1, 1954 to Macario and Azucena Gonzalez, she was the eldest of seven children.

She graduated from La Joya High School in 1972, shortly after she received her Associates in Nursing from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas. She went on to pursue her career in Brownsville, Texas at Brownsville Medical Center in 1975 where she began working as an EMS nurse. Later on she transferred to Valley Community Hospital where she worked in Labor and Delivery for 13 years and met her husband. After her time with the hospital she started working for the Cameron County Health Dept., W.I.C program in 1988 and retired 25 years later in 2013. After 2 years of being retired in Brownsville, she moved to San Antonio for a short period of time and then eventually settled in Pleasanton, Texas. Sandra really enjoyed taking scenic drives around Texas with her husband and children, exploring areas that she had never seen before. Other things she enjoyed doing in her spare time was tending to her plants, bird watching, catching up on Star Trek, having long in-depth conversations, spending quality time with her husband, kids, grandkids, and her loyal four-legged companion Miss Lola Falana.

Her favorite time of the year was Christmas, she really loved going around looking at lights and admiring the way people had decorated their homes, she absolutely loved poinsettias and always had to have plenty on hand to be able to give some to family and friends. During the holidays Sandra would always be in the kitchen either cooking or baking and sharing or teaching her recipes to her children for them to carry on some day. Most of the time she wasn't a big talker, but her presence was impactful. Throughout the years Sandra tried to help the unfortunate whenever possible by donating food, clothes, school supplies, and passing along the word of God with her father in law. Her in laws were missionaries from 1959 to 2006 serving the United States and Mexico. These trips to Mexico were very spiritual for her and helped her establish a greater relationship with her creator.

She will always be remembered as a sassy, fun-loving, critiquing, selfless, wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Every time we see peacocks or their colors as well as the color purple she will be thought of, as those were her favorite.

She was preceded in death by her father Macario Gonzalez, her brother Mateo Gonzalez, her sister in law Lorraine Claire Aguilar, her mother in law Ruth Marie Rowland Metzger, and her father in law Rev. LeRoy Frederick Metzger Sr.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, William Frederick Metzger Sr., her son William Frederick Metzger Jr., her daughters Vanessa Victoria Metzger-Gomez (Daniel Gomez Jr.), and Lorraine Nicole Metzger (Daniel F. Ibarra IV). Her mother Azucena Gonzalez, her brothers and sisters, Macario Gonzalez Jr. (Consuelo), Fernando Gonzalez (Graciela), Arnoldo Gonzalez (Myrthala), Sonia Olivarez (John Michael), Edna Gonzalez (Frank). Her brother and sister in laws, Mabel Evelyn Gomez (Agustine), Michael Charles Metzger (Susane), Wilhelmina Le Roi Cody (Steve), Jeffery Paul Metzger (Felicitas). Her grandkids, William Frederick Metzger III and Charlotte Elizabeth Metzger, her numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and of course her fur baby Miss Lola Falana along with her grand fur babies, Troy, Lady May, and Leila Rae.

Her love for her husband and children was always deep and unconditional. Anytime, anywhere; if we needed advice or guidance she was always there to come through no matter what the situation was.

She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. We love you so much!

The Metzger family would like to personally thank Methodist Hospital Atascosa, Methodist Metropolitan Hospital, and Kindred Hospital (Baptist Medical Center) for taking such good care of Sandra and giving her a fighting chance. We are forever grateful for the time we were able to have with Sandra back at home. Also we would like to thank immensely is Mrs. Lawrence here at Hurley Funeral Home, we appreciate all the time you took with us to be able to celebrate Sandra in the best way possible; without you we would have been lost.

Services will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Texas on December 12, 2022 from 3:00-9:00pm and on December 13, 2022 at 2:00pm. A burial ceremony will follow at Sandy Hill/Pleasanton City Cemetery at 3:30pm.
