Sandy was born at the old Sherman hospital in Elgin, IL and lived in So Elgin in a rented home with our parents and then moved to 68 Wilcon Ave in Elgin, IL. Sandy went to grade school at Washington Elementary School on the corner of Chicago and Wilcon. I would walk down the street to watch Sandy in Kindergarten class wishing I could be there with her.
Our mother would send as both to the enclosed front porch of to watch for our aunt Mily and Uncle Scotty from Michigan arrive in their orange-colored panel truck as they would be bringing us our Christmas gifts, so we waited very patiently on the front porch. Our parents always had a live Christmas tree.
When our parents purchased there first house at 748 South Prairie, Barrington, IL the whole family helped finish the interior as they do not have enough money or loan value to finish the interior. This helped Sandy and me to develop a workmanship as nothing comes easy without work.
Around Thanksgiving Sandy and Bob went hunting with our father for Pheasants and rabbits because the first snow would come so our dad could track them down...as it was so much fun to be with our father outdoors as Don rarely missed his first shot with his Browning Shotgun.
After super the whole neighborhood played games together, baseball, kick the can and "Pom-pom away and in the winter, we went sledding and ice skating at (BAKERS) Etters Lake. The sledding was at a nearby step hill with all the Neiborhood kids.
We all worked in the at small jobs though the year and then in the summer we went to Hills Lake in Wild Rose, WI for one week and rented a cabin and learned to water ski and made summer friends who came back each year. The total cost for a week at Hills Lake was $100.00 for the whole family of six (6)!
Sandy graduated from Barrington High School in 1959 and was involved in Brochettes, Typing, Girls Glee Club, G.A.A, Reading Club, Social Dan, Square Dance Club and Cheerleading.
Sandy attended Elgin Community College for a year in which she enjoined. She also worked at the Church of the Brethren General Offices in Elgin, IL and earned a pension of $600.00 per month along with her Social Security which led to nice retirement.
Allen and Sandy were entrepreneurs starting two different businesses: home inspections and Radon inspections in which they were very successful in which they could own their home on the Fox River on Fox River Grove.
Bob and Rose Gergen sincerely send our condolences.
