Sandy's obituary
Sandra Anne Herman “Sandy”, 67, of Santa Maria, CA, passed away on November 4, 2023 after a 5-year battle with breast cancer.
Sandy was born on July 6, 1956 to Mildred and Dick Ray in Greensboro, NC. After attending Chapel Hill High School, she went on to earn her Associates’ in Accounting at Lancaster Business School, in Lancaster Pennsylvania.
Sandy was married to Robert Karl Herman in 1979, and had two daughters Annadele Herman and Angelique Herman. After Karl’s passing, she later married Nathan Wagner and had a third daughter, Evelyn Wagner.
Sandy is survived by; two of her daughters, Annadele Herman and Angelique Herman; her brothers Richard Shaw Ray and William Richard Ray; stepmother Adele Ray; grandchildren Canyon and Avery Ednie, and Delayza Bey; and many cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, parents, and daughter Evelyn Wagner.
One of her happiest times in life was running a horse and buggy business, Lancaster Carriages in Leola Pennsylvania in the 1980’s. Lancaster Carriage was a partnership with Sandy and her first husband Robert Herman. Robert built and restored Amish carriages and Sandy managed the horse barn. They both drove tourists on Amish buggy rides in Lancaster County, PA. One of their favorite horses was named T.H. They also had two collies named Brandy and Peaches.
Sandy enjoyed a life-long love of all thing’s horses. During her 50-plus-year equestrian career, she taught hundreds of riding students (including her three daughters), trained horses in many styles of equine-ship including English, Western, Hunt-seat and Dressage. She worked at horse stables in many states including: North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and California.
In her 60’s, Sandy enjoyed a retirement in Santa Maria, CA where she would frequent the pool and hot tub in her community. She remained a member of the horse community and enjoyed training her grand dog, Lola. She was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Santa Maria.
A memorial service will take place at her former apartment Vandenburg Senior Residences in Santa Maria, CA at 12:00 pm on December 2nd, 2023. A second service will be held at Duckrun Natural Cemetery in Penn Laird, Virginia in March 2024 (exact dates TBD), where she will be laid to rest with her late daughter Evelyn Wagner.
