Background

My sister fought a hard battle twice with breast cancer. The first time she was only 27 . She was pregnant and had found a lump in her breast but refused treatment because she was worried about her unborn child's health. When she did go in for treatment she had a macetomy and chemotherapy. She was able to beat it. It took her hair, one breast, her energy and was taking care of two kids with help from family. She had purchased property when her son was young and was hell bent on keeping and even through this she managed to. 13 years later it came back with vengeance as this sneaky coward of a killer does sometimes. The diagnosis was stage 4 metastasized breast cancer.. She wasn't shook. We were. She fought hard like the warrior woman that she was. Determined to keep her home and land for kids future interests. We never knew the strength that lie within her although we all still relied on we just didn't everything it took for her to do this. We stayed in a protective shield that she wanted for us to keep us safe from the brutal truth we denied completely. But it finally after another hard battle long fought she wanted to let go. She was tired and knew her time was running out. We remained in denial this was a just a down time she'd get back on her feet like always. Because she always did she worked cleaning condos during most all of this. AMAZING the strength and determination. If I start to complain or feel sorry for myself I think of her. Her only wish in life was to leave her kids in good standing. She was a single working class mom. But by no means ordinary. She was built strong and it's like she was in charge of this disease instead of the other way around. She gave it its chance from time to time but then would kick in the ass so she could get back to work . She had bills to pay kids to feed. Didnt have to be sick from dying of cancer and we never were about to let her go anyway that wouldn't happen. But it did. It happen. Do the years remaining to payoff her mortgage and fulfill her dream and life goal of having that for her 2 kids and granddaughter and future ones to come. The mission of the American Cancer Society is to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

  • How are donations used?

While most people know us for our research, we do so much more. We attack cancer from every angle. We promote healthy lifestyles to help you prevent cancer. We research cancer and its causes to find more answers and better treatments. We fight for lifesaving policy changes. We provide everything from emotional support to the latest cancer information for those who have been touched by cancer. And we do it all 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • What can be done with a $100 donation?

$100 can provide two free nights at an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge community to patients and their caregivers, saving them more than $5,674 in lodging costs. It also has the potential to provide 4 free rides to treatment for cancer patients who would otherwise have no means of transportation.

  • What progress has been made already thanks to your donors?

By taking what we’ve learned through research and translating it into action, we’ve contributed to a 26% decrease in the overall US cancer death rate since 1991. That means that we helped avoid nearly 2.4 million cancer deaths during that time.

The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 and has been the leading cancer fighting organization since that time. We’ve been part of major Cancer Breakthroughs in the Past Century, such as:
