Sam's obituary
Samuel August Cancila, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, at The Grande at Creve Coeur assisted living facility.
Born on September 29, 1933, in St. Louis, Missouri, Sam was the beloved son of Anna and Mariano Cancila. He graduated from Saint Louis University High School and later attended Saint Louis University, where he met Nanette Becker—the love of his life. They married in 1956 and built a home in Kirkwood, where they raised their family and were longtime members of St. Peter Catholic Church until Nanette’s passing in 2017.
Sam spent his entire career at McDonnell Douglas (later Boeing), where he was known for his commitment and strong work ethic. He was deeply devoted to his children and always showed up for his family in times of need.
In his final days, Sam was surrounded by his children. As a lifelong Catholic, he received the Last Rites, including the Anointing of the Sick—a sacred rite offering comfort and grace—before entering into the Lord’s eternal care.
He is survived by his six children: Mary, Cheri (Joe Bahr), Carrie Weathers (Jessie), Terry (Michele), Ted (Don Sumada), and Tim; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews on both the Cancila and Becker sides of the family.
A Funeral Mass to honor Sam’s life will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 23 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, 243 W. Argonne Dr., Kirkwood. Interment of ashes will follow immediately at St. Peter Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made online to the Dementia Society of America at www.DementiaSociety.org/donate, in memory of Sam.
