SSGT Sammie Lee Hemingway Sr. (Sam), 58, passed away surrounded by his loving family on February 12, 2021. Sam was a decorated veteran who served 8 years active duty in the Air Force.

Sam was born in Albany, New York on June 17, 1962; his parents Edith and Elijah Johnson. After graduating from Albany High in 1981 he enlisted and served in the Air Force where he began his journey. He then went on to attend Community College of the Air Force to graduate in 1996 with an Associate’s Degree of Applied Science in Electrical Power Systems.

When he wasn’t working hard for his ever-growing family, Sam had a passion for making people laugh with his charming demeanor. From family to friends and even co-workers, whether he liked them or not; he would never fail to put a smile on their face. He always had a knack for making everyone feel welcome. Always willing to lend an ear, he was always there when needed.

During his free time, Sam could be found enjoying fishing, reading books, cooking or catching up with people. Occasionally he would take some time away from city life to visit a nice, quiet fishing spot. If fishing wasn’t on his mind, he always had a book waiting for him. He was also a big fan of having family get-togethers for cookouts, making sure everyone had a nice filling plate! With as busy as his life was, it wasn’t uncommon for him to reach out to see how those in his life were doing.

With family across the nation, Sammie Lee Hemingway Sr. will be forever loved and never forgotten. His laugh and jokes will always be remembered. He was a son, brother, father, uncle, grandpa and friend to us all.

Sam was predeceased by Leroy Cancer (Son) and James Johnson (Father). He is survived by Edith Johnson (Mother), Anthony Johnson (Brother), Millicent Sanders (Sister), Danielle Johnson (Sister), Thomas Hemingway (Brother), Khalil Johnson (Brother), Tyrell Johnson (Brother), Brenda Beverly (Daughter), Anthony Johnson Sr. (Son), Sametria Robinson (Daughter), Nakeya Hemingway (Daughter), Elijah Hemingway (Son), Sammie Hemingway Jr. (Son), Mahalia Hemingway (Daughter), Isaiah Hemingway (Son), Sha-Quashia (Granddaughter), Lil Anthony Johnson Jr. (Grandson), Zyon (Grandson), Briarah (Granddaughter), Mekhi (Grandson), Allure (Granddaughter), NaZiya (Granddaughter), Elisa Robinson (Granddaughter), Olivia Robinson (Granddaughter), Elijah Hemingway Jr. (Grandson), Maye-Lynn Hemingway (Granddaughter), Zeke Hemingway (Grandson), one Great-Grandson and several Uncles, Aunts, Nieces and Nephews.

Sam’s memorial service will be held at the Lord’s House of Deliverance in Cohoes, New York on Friday, February 19th at 11:00am.
