Salvatore's obituary
Salvatore Spiezia, better known as Sal, best known as 'Grandfather,' passed away at 78 years old on August 1st, 2023. A resident of the West Village for a half century, he wholeheartedly believed it to be the center of the universe, and that there was no point in ever venturing above 14th Street.
Part philosopher, part astronomer, committed futurist, Sal was ahead of his time and yet held dear the past, from Pink Floyd and the moon landing to William Gibson and the multiverse. Founder of the Video Onion, Sal had a passion for photography, the introduction of video broadcasting and the value of art for art's sake.
But his truest and most committed love belonged to his son, Francesco, better known as 'Frankie' or 'Wookie,' and to his grandson, Ellis, better known as 'The Prince.' Sal passed along his love for cars to Ellis, who will honor his legacy by going all the way to the top of the sport. Everything Sal idolized about the past was before it’s time, and always with an eye on the future. This is the true gift he gave to Ellis. An unbending belief in what is to come.
Besides Wookie & The Prince, Sal leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Michele, for whom he made his bed every morning (afternoon?) when staying with them in Hoboken. In addition, Sal has a small group of lifelong friends-- Rocco, Peter, Betty & John, Artesia and Athena-- who will have to keep an eye on life below 14th Street from now on. Without his former wife, Maureen (Dorsey) Baumann, he wouldn't have Wookie or the Prince, and so much attentive and loving care at the end of his life.
In his honor, Ellis, Frankie and Michele will continue the race season in Europe, racking up podiums and points. A gathering will be planned for the December holidays to celebrate his life. If one had to guess, it's a pretty sure bet he's on the Dark Side of the Moon throwing a tennis ball for Boomerang.
