Sally's obituary

Sally(Sara) Anderson was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her. She was born in Sunburst, Montana on January 24, 1940. Her childhood took her to Casper, Wyoming, New York, and Maui before she settled in Portland, Oregon, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958. Sally went on to attend and graduate from the University of Oregon, becoming a lifelong Duck fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Dr. John Anderson. She is survived by her four children: Eric Nelson (Karen), Leslie Nelson (David), Brenda Wolfe (Paul), and Justin Anderson (Melissa); six grandchildren: Sam Nelson, Paige Bergman, Kendall Kracke, Luke Nelson, Kahlan Anderson, and Aryanna Anderson; her brother Tony Given; brother-in-law Theodore Anderson (Eva); and many beloved nieces and nephews. Sally's family also included numerous cats and dogs. She had a love of animals from her very early childhood in Casper that lasted through her life. She was never without a pet.

Sally dedicated her career to education. She taught second grade for several years before turning toward teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults. She founded and directed the highly successful newcomer program for Portland Public Schools, helping countless children adjust to their new lives.

Later, Sally fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening a bookstore, coffee shop, and music venue in downtown Vancouver, WA. She quickly became a cherished member of the community, known for her kindness, generosity, and welcoming spirit.

She and John shared a love of bicycling and travel, riding the entire Oregon Coast and cycling through France. Above all, Sally treasured time spent with her family and especially her grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy.

Sally passed peacefully on Thursday, November 20, surrounded in her final day by her children and their spouses. A private entombment will take place at Willamette National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.

Her many friends are encouraged to gather and share memories of the wonderful Sally. She had a big heart and supported numerous charities through volunteering and donations. In place of flowers, the family suggests honoring Sally’s memory with a donation to one of her favorite causes: the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Friends of Trees, or the Portland Humane Society.

She will be deeply loved and missed by all who knew her.
