Sally Carpenter was my book tour escort in Cleveland in February 1986. I was a nervous wreck about doing interviews but she made me laugh all day. We stayed friends for 39 years. I will fondly remember her trips from Barrington to New York City where she would meet with book publishers, then have lunch with Peter Kaplan and then meet me for dinner at the Princeton Club. I would be dog tired by the end of the dinner, but Sally would somehow persuade me to see a movie at Times Square. We saw all the chick flicks "Knocked up"; " The 40 Year Old Virgin" "He's Just Not That Into You." I also remember seeing the Howard Stern movie with her, which she thoroughly enjoyed. When the movies ended around ten pm, Sally would hop into her car to drive the 3 1/2 hour trip back to Barrington! She had boundless energy- a real live wire. She and Chuck were very good to me. I used to bike with Chuck on the bike path in Barrington up to Providence. Sally's death is a huge loss for me and I feel as if I've lost an anchor. My condolences to the entire family.
