Salim's obituary

Salim “Sal” C. Ouabi, a loving husband, legendary father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away on June 11, 2023 in Naperville, Illinois. Born on July 15, 1947, Sal lived a life filled with love, laughter, and memorable moments. He is survived by his devoted wife, Neelum Ouabi, and their daughters, Naziha (David) Groharing and Natasha (Pedro) Calderon, four grandchildren Jakob Villicana, Dris Calderon, Jovan Calderon, & Nerisa Calderon (his BFF). Sal was predeceased by his father, Driss Ouabi, his mother, Rabha Ouabi, and his eldest child, Kamal Ouabi.

Sal had a passion for business stemming from when he was a Diplomat for the Moroccan Embassy in India at the age of 18 and came to America in pursuit of the American Dream, he owned several small businesses before retiring. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Sal. He enjoyed spending time with family and delicious food, with favorites including Tajine, Couscous, Prime Rib, Portillo’s Beef & Cheddar croissants, Greek Islands Lamb shank, Butter Chicken and Reese’s Peanut butter cups. His favorite musical artists featured a diverse range of genres, from the soulful sounds of James Brown and the disco tunes of The Bee Gees to the classic rock of Chicago and Journey, and the pop hits of ABBA and Michael Jackson.

Sal found joy and relaxation when he watched TV, with favorite shows including I Love Lucy, Sanford & Son, All in the Family, Three’s Company, Charlie's Angels, and Wonder Woman. He was a proud sports fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls & watching soccer.

Sal appreciated traveling to Morocco, Niagra Falls, Nice, Monaco, & Hawaii. He cherished moments spent with his grandchildren, and taking his children to view the Chicago skyline at the Aquarium, Museum of Science & Industry and taking in the views on the 96th floor of the John Hancock.

Sal will be remembered most for his sharp, genuine, positive, always willing to help personality, which brightened the lives of those around him. His unfailing warmth and optimism will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on through the many lives he touched.

Sal was laid to rest on June 12, 2023. As we mourn the loss of Sal C. Ouabi, let us find comfort by celebrating his legendary life and the memories we shared with him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
