Celebrating The Life of Sadie Butler Nelson
Sadie Butler Nelson, 89, a resident of Port Allen, Louisiana transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home at 3:26am on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas. Sadie was born in New Roads, LA on September 28, 1933 to the union of the late John Butler, Sr. and Tessie Ventress Butler.
She was baptized at an early age by the late Reverend Isaiah McCoy at Shiloh United Methodist Church. On August 22, 1953, she married the late Ivory Nelson, Sr., and to this union eleven children were born. Sadie was very active at Shiloh United Methodist Church, where she served as Mother of the church until she could no longer serve. She was a retired Dietician in the East Baton Rouge School System.
Sadie enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, listening to music, and sewing. She loved cooking for her family especially during the holidays. She will be dearly missed by friends and family whose lives she touched with her infectious smile, many acts of kindness, generosity and caring spirit.
She leaves to cherish her memories: six daughters, Veronica N. Hebert of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sandra K. Nelson of Port Allen, Louisiana, Sadie L. Thibodeaux (John) of Zachary, Louisiana, Monica J. White (Aaron) of Humble, Texas, Sanitria C. Nelson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Tarie Roberson (Kelton) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; three sons Ivory Nelson, Jr., of Port Allen, Louisiana, Staray J. Nelson (Odette) of Seattle Washington, and Joel D. Nelson (Tiwanda) of Walker, Louisiana; four sisters Alice Brown (Freddie) of Los Angeles, California, Barbara Dorsey (William) of Lornita, California, Linda Webb of Fordoche, Louisiana and Mildred Harris of Maringouin, Louisiana; two brothers Horace Butler, Sr., of Los Angeles, California and Curtis Butler of Los Angeles, California; two sisters-in-law Rosetta Nelson and Salueta Nelson, twenty-eight grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren, a devoted niece, Leticia Woods, god sons, Garrett Brown and Bryan Williams, god sister, Stephanie Knox, devoted friend, Audrey Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Sadie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ivory Nelson, Sr.; parents, John Butler, Sr., and Tessie Ventress Butler; daughters Jacquelyn L. White and Coretta D. Nelson, brothers John ButlerJr., Howard Butler, Sr., and sisters Tessie B. Handy and Theresa B. Isaac.
