Decades ago I took a course in short story writing with Sondra, I knew we were related because my brother-in-law was cousin to her husband, and I'd read her works and knew that she was a gifted writer, poet, and teacher, so I jumped at the chance to b instructed by her. Sure enough, her class was inspiring, fun, and energized me to begin writing again as I had in my earlier years. But I was a terrible typist and it took me longer to type my short stories than to conceive them. She was so encouraging that she even said to me, "write them longhand, Nomi, and I'll type them for you!" I never asked her to do this and even tried to learn to type faster, but this was just an example of her motivating, loving, and creative tutelage that gave me so much fun and drive during her class and after! She will always be in my memory of that time and the times we met after when she displayed the love and wisdom and motivating drive of a teacher, friend, and family matriarch!
I love these photos of Sondra, especially the one at the table, so unmistakably her. Heartfelt condolences to her family who loved her so, and were so loved by her. As my poetry teacher, she gave me the inspiration, encouragement and courage to continue to write, to read aloud, and finally to publish. She was a gift. I will always remember her light, her intelligence, her humor.

Mike and I were sad to hear of Sondra’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are sent to Ira, Myra, Amy, Lauren and their families. We have Sondra’s poetry books at home and our sons Sam & Max bought copies too. We all send our condolences.

Loved our lunches with Ira and Sondra and visiting with them and sharing her poetry. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for life always made the visits fun. We will miss her dearly and send our love to Ira and family.
Sondra was a bright star in our poetry world, a creative and loving spirit! I will treasure the salons she and Ira hosted at their beautiful home in the woods, and the reading series she continued at Winchester Gardens. How privileged we are to have known her, in person and through her poetry.
