Ruth's obituary
Ruth Ru Filbin of Mashpee, MA, passed away on October 2, 2023, at her residence at Asher’s Path Apartments in Mashpee. Ruth was born in Bethesda, MD to Richard and Barbara Filbin on April 25, 1957. She is preceded by her mother and father in death.
Ruth’s mother and father welcomed her into life with great excitement, as they had experienced a series of miscarriages. She joined her older siblings, Nancy, and John. They were happy in Bethesda with many friends and children and activities together. They later moved back to Wellesley, MA, where Ruth’s younger brother Jim completed the family.
Ruth attended Wellesley schools and graduated from Bozeman High School in Bozeman, MT in 1977. Summers were spent with her many cousins at her grandparent’s Cape Cod home, and at Camp Se-Sa-Ma-Ca in Raymond, NH. Ruth later earned a Certified Nurses Aid (C.N.A) certification and worked at nursing homes in both Wellesley and Bozeman. She was always appreciated by her patients for her patience, humor, and acceptance. Ruth carried these qualities with her throughout the entirety of her professional and personal life and was as welcoming to a stranger as any close family member or companion.
Ruth married Norman Gort in the late 1980s and lived in Norwalk, CT, where she cared for Norman’s mother and Buddy, Norman’s son by a previous marriage. She cared later for Norman as well and they maintained a friendship after their divorce and up until his passing.
The highlight of Ruth’s life was the birth of her son, Ryan Justin, in 1993. As a young child, Ryan joined Ruth at her work and rode school bus routes with her every day up until beginning schooling. Ruth loved her new vocation as a bus driver. Ryan knew every highway, every route number, every bridge, and railroad crossing. Mark Randall, Ryan’s father, and his mother Mary were important contributors to their life in Connecticut.
Ruth brought Ryan to Cape Cod as a middle school student, where they lived at the family home on Amrita Island, Ryan attended Bourne schools up until senior year of high school, and she drove buses for the Steamship Authority. Ruth took great pride in Ryan’s college and teaching successes as an undergraduate from UConn and later as a Master’s graduate from Western Michigan University. Ruth was thankful to visit Ryan while he lived in Michigan and later in Milwaukee, WI.
Ruth retired in 2020 and was comfortable in her residence at Asher’s Path Apartments, where neighbors and staff took great interest in her well-being and remarked upon her kind and caring disposition. This disposition served her well in perhaps Ruth’s most fulfilling occupation, working for Meals on Wheels in Mashpee from 2016-2019. Ruth took great pride in serving others and making an impact in the community, and discussed with great pride with her family how fulfilling the role was for her.
Ruth is preceded in death by her mother and father, her ex-husband Norman, and her daughter Rececca Gort, who passed away in her infancy. She is survived by her son, Ryan, and her siblings Nancy, John, and Jim. Ruth is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
The family plans to hold an intimate, private celebration of life for Ruth on October 29th on Cape Cod. In lieu of memorial or funeral contributions, the family asks those who wish to donate to Meals on Wheels America, P.O. Box 791568, Baltimore, MD 21279-1568.
