Russell's obituary
The list of those who mourn his loss with us extends abroad to loved ones in the Philippines and Dubai, a show of how thoroughly he could connect and love those who came into his life.
Russell was born in Penn Yann, NY, and grew up between Boston and Buffalo, NY. In 1992 he married Claudia Gernold, and had four wonderful children: Zach, Josh, Jake, and Hannah. He was a lover of life and lived every day passionately. In his younger days he spent time teaching his children how to woodwork, garden, and build, skills which he grew into a career by starting his own business, Russell R. Gernold Construction. As he grew older, he spent many days with his son Josh, and playing with Fuego, the family pit-bull and his beloved friend.
Everyone who knew him knew of his creativity and dedication. Russell had an infectious smile and the ability to start up a conversation with anyone, much to the embarrassment of his children at times. He was an avid naturalist, with a green thumb like no other. More than anything, he loved studying natural health and wellness. An expert on edible plants, he used what he found in nature in all parts of his life, especially his cooking.
Russell was truly a soul that loved the simple things and never took a moment for granted. Sadness does not begin to describe the loss we feel, but we are comforted by stories and memories of the times we shared with him.
A memorial luncheon will be held on Saturday, August 1st from 11am-3pm at Letchworth State Park-St. Helen’s Pavilion. Kindly note that due to COIVD-19 restrictions, there are only 50 people allowed in the pavilion at one time and spaced seating is limited. We recommend bringing a lawn chair for your comfort. Per park rules, parking is $10 per car.
If you wish to give to the family, we kindly request contributions as financial assistance for the services.
