Russ's obituary

Russell "Russ" Cowen, a beloved father, husband, and former longtime resident of Richland, WA, passed away on December 1, 2023. Born on January 20, 1934 in Jordan, Montana to Lee and Fern Cowen, Russ was a pillar of his community and a steadfast family man, well-known for his friendly, compassionate, and humorous nature.

Russ had a long career in banking, but switched to Real Estate and owned his own business in the Spokane Valley for several years.

Russ is survived by his adoring wife Chris Cowen, and his cherished children; daughters Jan Christopherson, Joan Cardwell, Jill Holman, and Jennifer Cowen, and his son, John Cowen. He also had a stepdaughter: Sherry Erickson and stepson Robert Millar, as well as 13 grandchildren. His memory will continue to live on through their lives, as well as the many friends, family members, and his dear dog, Maggie, who will deeply miss him.

A dedicated member of Hillspring Church, Russ's commitment to his faith translated in his service to the community. He served as an Usher and Greeter and cooked every Saturday for the men's group. After moving to Arizona, Russ became a member of Desert Rock Church. As a volunteer at several organizations such as  Meals on Wheels, Jaycees, (Jaycee of the year award in Helena, Montana in 1963), Kiwanis, and the Richland County Food Bank, he spent countless hours helping those in need. His generosity and kindness are a testament to his character and form a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Apart from his community engagements, Russ was an Eagle scout in his younger days and had an immense passion for football. He was an avid fan of the Seattle Seahawks and could quote stats about any player in the NFL. If fantasy football was your thing, all it took was a phone call to Russ to pick a winning team. His love for games extended to playing cards and Sequence, a fond family pastime that brought many laughter-filled evenings to the Cowen household.

A Celebration of Russ's life will be held on his 90th birthday, January 20, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Hillspring Church. His family invites all those whose lives were touched by Russ to join them in honoring his memory. As we remember Russ, let us celebrate a life well-lived, full of kindness, laughter, service, and love. His spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
