Russell's obituary
It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Russell Collins: our rock, light, loving husband, dad, Papa, and friend. He left us peacefully surrounded by close friends and family April 15, 2024.
The world became a brighter place January 3, 1932 on the day he was born to William F. and Marion (Grogan) Collins in Higginsville, MO, where he grew up and attended school. Russell was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was invited by the Korean government to tour in appreciation for his bravery and honor while serving overseas. Russell retired as a Fire Apparatus Operator for KCFD after 34 years where he enjoyed serving the community of Kanas City.
On December 1, 1953, he was united in marriage to Zora McKinney. After their marriage, they moved to Kansas City where they made their home. He proudly wore many hats, and maintained many titles throughout his life; his favorite, by far, was being a Papa. Russell was a member of the Egerton Christian Church as well as the VFW.
Russell is preceded in death by his parents, brother; William Collins, and sister Beverly Cornelison. He is survived by his loving wife Zora, children: Susan (Terry) Burns, Mickey (Sherry) Collins, grandchildren: Michelle Collins, Halley Collins, Teagan (Jimmy) Slosson, Kelsey Burns, and great granddaughter: Ava Belle, as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
He lived his life injecting humor into every situation, and loved to bring a smile to peoples faces. Anyone who met Russell quickly learned that there are always laughs to be shared. It was impossible to spend any time with him without enjoying a gut busting laugh at some point in the conversation. He was always willing to help anyone who wanted or needed his help. He was a great teacher, a dependable friend, and an even better Papa.
He spent days at home caring for his immaculate yard, tinkering in his garage, watching and feeding his birds, and had a deep love for woodworking. He cherished time with his fishing pole on any body of water whether Beaver, Table Rock, Smithville Lakes. Russell especially loved entertaining by sharing his favorite stories of collected memories through the years. He took great pride in his family, and will be greatly missed at Sunday dinners.
Papa your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure.
