Roy's obituary
Roy Perry Boger, 64, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away on January 27, 2026, in Grand Rapids. He was born August 18, 1961, in Grand Rapids, the only son of Jack and Phyllis (Sherk) Boger.
Roy’s childhood was spent in Yankee Springs (Barry County), where he loved playing outdoors with his army men and imagining the Wild West. A favorite photograph of his was taken at Mount Rushmore in 1964. He graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School in 1980 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Army, serving six years; he treasured the year he spent stationed in South Korea.
For the last 25 years of his life Roy lived in Grand Rapids. He was a hard worker who held many jobs—nothing was beneath him. Though he experienced hardship, those who knew him remember a quiet man with a dry sense of humor and a steady presence. Roy met people wherever he found them without judgment, offering what he could—whether a meal, a cigarette, or simply company. He enjoyed summer days in Heartside Park and valued the friendships he made there as well as the family and friends who reached out when they could.
Roy is survived by his three sisters: Shelley (Alan) Hubbard, Tammy Zylstra, and Rachel (Stacey) Curtis; numerous nieces and nephews; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Phyllis Boger.
At this time, no memorial service is planned. To honor Roy’s memory, donations may be made to the Grand Rapids Public Library, where he spent many winter days, or by doing an act of kindness for someone in need.
