Buffalo's obituary
Most people only knew our dad as Buffalo. If anyone mentioned the name Roy, or Mr. Birdsong, he would turn around looking for his dad, yet his full name was Roy Franklin Birdsong. He started going by “Buffalo” when he was a teenager. As a 6’5”, 285 lb 8th grader who was Native American, you might be able to understand why he was given the name.
"Buffalo" was a man whose presence was as commanding as his nickname. He passed away on January 31, 2026, at his home in Buchanan Dam, Texas. Born on January 21, 1951, in Oakland, California, he was a beacon of love and strength throughout his 75 years.
Buffalo was the beloved son of the late Roy and Naomi Birdsong. He was a cherished brother to Rose Birdsong and the late Ramona Crawford and Natalie Birdsong. His legacy continues through his adoring children—Louise, Steven, James, Ronnie, April, Megan, and Jacob—whom he raised with a boundless heart. Buffalo's spirit will forever be reflected in the lives of his grandchildren—Willow, Ivy, Cheyenne, Madison, Morgan, Savannah, Lindsey, Aiden, Jacy, Roy Calvin, and Takoda—and his great-grandchildren—Macey, Finley, Weston, Skye, and Esme.
As a Christian, Buffalo lived his faith through his actions, always placing others before himself. His thoughtful nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the way he nurtured his family to the kindness and teasing nature he extended to friends and strangers alike.
Buffalo's passions were as vast as the great outdoors he so loved. An avid hunter and fisherman, he found comfort in the peacefulness of nature. His love for dancing was infectious, and he could often be found leading a lively two-step or waltz on the dance floor. Buffalo was also a master of games, from shuffleboard to darts to pool and any sport, his competitive spirit was always accompanied by a mischievous grin.
Above all, Buffalo's greatest pride and joy was his family. The time spent with his children and grandchildren was precious, filled with laughter, lessons, and love. He was a pillar of strength and a fountain of wisdom, always ready with a story or a piece of advice.
Buffalo's life was a testament to the power of love and the importance of family. His selfless and loving nature made him a treasured companion, confidant, and role model. As we bid farewell to Roy "Buffalo" Birdsong, we celebrate a life well lived and a journey completed with resilience and grit. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the North Star leads a traveler home. Buffalo's spirit, as vast and enduring as the skies he loved, will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
