Rosie's obituary

Rosie Bell, affectionately known as "Blessed,"was a long time resident of Boston, MA. She was born on April 10, 1925, in Sanford, North Carolina.  After living a long and fulfilling life full of love, Rosie transitioned on to be with her Lord on November 7, 2020.

Rosie was one of 10 children born to the late Levy Dowdy of Golston, North Carolina, and Rosie Young Dowdy of Hornet County, North Carolina. Rosie was preceded in death by her sisters:  Bertha McGilvary, Beatrice Dowdy Jones, Laney McAuley, and Ollie McAuley; and brothers: James Dowdy, Malachi Dowdy, Charles Woodrow Dowdy, and John Clayton Dowdy.  She also leaves behind a sister Maggie Elisa Dowdy Clemons.

Rose was an employee of Boston City Hospital where she served as a nursing assistant, and loved reminiscing about her love for the job.  Rosie was a long-time member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she served as church Mother and a dedicated servant of the Lord. She liked ministering the "good word" to her family, friends, and neighbors and enjoyed displaying her love for the Lord which was evident when she sung her son "I Got Heaven on My Mind!" Everyone that came across Rosie’s path always left feeling "blessed," which eventually contributed to folks nicknaming her "Blessed."

Rosie was known to welcome people into her home and treated them as her own. You could always count on her for a good conversation and she made the best sweet potato pie in town! During the holidays, family was known to gather at “Granny’s” house to secure their pie. Don’t let someone’s pie go missing, if so there was serious problems!

Rosie was preceded in death by her sons, James C. McNeil, Samuel H. McNeil, and Joseph McNeil, Jr. She also leaves to mourn her precious memories one daughter, Janice McNeil-Horner and two sons: Leviticus "Lee" McNeil (wife, Roslyn McNeil) and Gene A. McNeil (wife, Jeniffer McNeil.)  She also leaves 30 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

She will be missed by all.
