Rose's obituary

Rose Marie Talarico (nee Marini), finally at peace, left us on October 2, 2018. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts at Boston City Hospital on November 21, 1938.

Rose was sweet, kind-hearted, nurturing, and generous with her family and friends. She was resilient all of her life, but most recently in overcoming multiple illnesses so that she could stay with her family as long as possible. She was an indomitable spirit.

While she had not lived in Massachusetts for more than 40 years, she retained her Boston accent to the delight of many, especially when she was heard spouting her creative epithets. She taught many of her best epithets to her children, their friends, and her grandchildren.

She was a fierce defender of her family, but she had a wry sense of humor. Because Melissa once wrote her name wrong on a paper at school, she was forever known as “Miss Piss.” She was an accomplice to towel theft from some of the finest hotels in the world. She laughed at her husband when he faltered at something and never failed to tell the rest of the family about it; she would never let him take himself too seriously. She gave Laura back her baby bottle after she was weaned from it because she didn’t want her to feel bad when she gave a bottle to her baby brother, Ryan. She made Sandra threaten an 8-year-old girl on a school bus when she discovered the girl was bullying her son, Ralph.

Even though she was a trained lifeguard, she hated the water. She had a pool at her home for many year but did not get into the pool until she was promised a new dining room set if went for a swim. Years later, she gave that dining set away to Ralph and Belkis. She wanted everyone else to have the things she didn’t want any more: furniture, carpets, and knick-knicks.

Rose taught her family that the best way to bring everyone together was around a table full of food. She was renown for her homemade raviolis and meatballs, but also her less renown tuna noodle casserole.

She was an avid, some say voracious reader, of books, some classic, some less so. She loved movies, particularly comedies, her interests in the genre stretched from And Justice for All to Turner and Hooch.

Rose also loved sports and her Boston Celtics. Ralph and Rose bought their first VCR just to record Celtic games, which they watched over and over again. Rose’s favorite scene from the playoffs was Kareem Abdul Jabbar taking oxygen in the June heat of Boston Garden.

When her family was grown and out of the house, she worked with her husband to help him run his small business. She also worked as a receptionist in doctors offices where she lent an ear to those who needed it.

Rose met the love of her life, Ralph, while in high school. They were married for 59 years. Rose raised four loving children. They and their families are Sandra Talarico and Russell Brodfuhrer. Melissa Hilden, her husband Bill and their children Curtis, Mia, and Kent. Her daughter Donna Barrett and her husband Bruce, their son Ryan, daughter Laura Hansen, her husband Chris and their son Conner. Her son Ralph Talarico and his wife Belkis and their children Paolo and Massimo.

The memorial service will be private. Donations can be made in Rose’s name to Doctors without Borders.
