Ronald's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Walter Ross after a courageous battle with both Parkinson’s and prostate cancer.
He is survived by his wife Raye, and their son Michael. He is predeceased by his father Walter and brother Moe (Sandy). He was an uncle to their children Kate and Jeff. He was a loving family member to his sisters-in-law; Susan (Ron Dunn) and their sons Taylor and Ryan, as well as Patty (Don Edmonston) and their daughters Dawn-Lynn and Stephanie.
Ron was adopted as a young boy, and the Ross family were a major positive influence on his life. He would help his father, who was a milkman, with deliveries by horse and buggy. He completed his studies at McMaster University and received a degree in history and mathematics. He was a teacher at Queen Elizabeth Sr. School, ILC, Applewood Heights Secondary and a private college and had a profound love for calculus. He was affectionately known as the ‘calculus man’ by friends and family.
Ron enjoyed travelling, and some of his favourite trips were to fishing lodges with Michael and his friends where he would cook for the group, by the lake at Michael’s in Penetanguishene, and Europe for the amazing history, museums, art galleries and scenery – Norway, Austria and the Czech Republic were among his favourite places to explore.
Ron loved to play hockey, basketball, baseball and was a longtime member of the Fitness Institute in Mississauga. As an avid sports fan, he followed his favourite teams closely in good times and in bad, including the Dallas Cowboys, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston Celtics, Montreal Canadiens and of course his beloved Boston Red Sox.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was always the happiest guy in the room. He possessed a charm and generosity to others that cannot be matched. To relax, he would play duplicate bridge and listen to classical composers; Vivaldi, Puccini, and Pavarotti to name a few. His favourite song was ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini’ by Rachmaninoff.
As a lifelong teacher, Ron was always an advocate for education. His final wish was to donate his body for science research at McMaster University. The family would like to thank the health professionals at OTMH, especially Dr. Casey, Dr. Stirling and Dr. Ghate, and Ian Anderson House for their exceptional care.
Donations can be made in Ron’s honour to the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada [https://fundraise.cafdn.org/2…
There will be a celebration of Ron’s life in Spring 2024.
