Ronald's obituary

Ronald Hugh Thompson, architect, artist, and legendary storyteller, passed away on May 27th, 2024, in Seattle, Washington surrounded by his two loving daughters, Polly and Samantha.

He was born to Hugh and Lillian Thompson on January 17th, 1929, in Dublin, Ireland. As a boy, he moved with his family to Limerick where the backdrop for many of his anecdotes unfolded. These included encounters like tussling with Richard Harris or boldly storming Bunratty Castle, followed by a refreshing glass of Lemonade at a historic bar he staunchly claimed to be the original source of its current moniker, Durty Nelly’s.

In his youth, Ronald displayed a remarkable talent for art, starting by selling cartoon sketches, which ultimately led him to a passion and career in architecture. He attended night school while working during the day as a Junior Architect Assistant before becoming a distinguished member of the Royal Institute of Architects Ireland and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Ronald's professional journey took him to every major continent with notable achievements in airport architecture and master planning in such countries as Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Nicaragua, Guyana and Israel. He worked with renowned architects including Edward Durrell Stone, Ernó Goldfinger and the founders of HOK, not to mention projects with both SOM and Bechtel Corporation

He left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape, contributing to prestigious projects such as the expansion of DFW, the Dulles International Terminal and the master plan for both the new Hong Kong and Denver International Airports. His airport design and art consultancy expertise left a lasting legacy in countries like Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong, where his work fostered opportunities for local artists and aspiring architects.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ronald was revered for his captivating storytelling. His anecdotes, often shared over a glass of Scotch, English breakfast tea, enchanting everyone who had the pleasure of his company. His narratives painted vivid pictures of his childhood, travels, experiences, and the vibrant characters he encountered along the way.

In his later years, Ronald continued to inspire with his artwork, finding inspiration in the landscapes of the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. His paintings, exhibited in galleries and museums, captured each locale's essence with care.

Ronald was lifelong passionate student of WWII history, having been just too young to have joined up himself. He paid constant homage over the years to all men and women that serve, particularly those in WWII. It was, therefore, fitting that he passed away on, of all days, Memorial Day.

Ronald Hugh Thompson is survived by his daughters, Polly and Samantha, his former wife Joanna, his son-in-law, Jesse, and his cherished granddaughters, Chloë and Fiona. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity, innovation, and storytelling that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Ronald will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
