Wayne's obituary
RONALD "WAYNE" HAYES
Born September 8, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana - Passed on May 26, 2025
Ronald "Wayne" Hayes passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, in the home of his daughter,
Rhonda Jo Doubleday. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Wayne experienced a life filled with both
challenge and joy. As a young boy, his mother, Edna "Greely" Leap, brought him to a foster home
where he made lasting friendships that would shape his life. Among them was Ervin King, whom
Wayne considered a true brother. Their bond remained strong throughout their lives until Ervin's
passing.
Wayne eventually built a life in Baton Rouge, where he worked for the City and proudly served his
community until retirement. He was known for his boundless kindness, warm heart, and legendary
sense of humor. Whether it was through a perfectly timed joke or a quiet act of generosity, Wayne
had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved.
He was passionate about 1950s music and had a special love for Elvis Presley, proudly collecting
memorabilia that brought him joy and nostalgia. But above all, it was his family who brought him the
greatest happiness - especially the time spent with his many grandchildren.
Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Corean Hayes, his daughter Tina Marie
Hayes, and his lifelong friend and chosen brother Ervin King. In his later years, Wayne found
renewed companionship and love with his dear friend Josie King, who remained by his side with
devotion and care until his final days.
He is survived by his daughters, Beverly Jean McCauley and Rhonda Jo Doubleday; his
sons-in-law, David McCauley and Joshua Doubleday; his treasured grandchildren; and countless
others who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on June 14th at 2:00 PM at Live Oak Baptist Church. All who knew
Wayne - whether for a lifetime or a brief moment - are invited to attend, share a story, or simply be
present to honor a man whose laughter, compassion, and heart left a mark on everyone he met.
Wayne's legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and deep love. He will be profoundly missed and
forever remembered.
