Beloved father, grandfather, and brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Blackston Young of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Thursday evening, January 23, 2025, at 89. Born on January 14, 1936, in Washington, D.C., to the late George Alfred and Virginia Moss Young, Ronnie was known for his quiet strength and dedication to his family. He graduated from the former Armstrong Manual Training School (now Friendship Armstrong Academy) in Washington, D.C.

In 1954, at 18, Ronnie enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with distinction in the rank of Airman First Class until 1957. While enlisted, he was a medic and visited Italy, Japan, and China. His time in the Air Force shaped much of his character, instilling a deep sense of discipline, loyalty, and patriotism that remained with him throughout his life. Ronnie was particularly proud of his service during a time of significant change and challenge, and his commitment to his country was a defining aspect of his identity.

Following an honorable discharge from the military, Ronnie returned home and met and married Erma Hollingsworth in 1966, building a career and raising a family. Recognized for over 40 years of service to the United States Government from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he received a Certificate of Appreciation for his contributions and dedicated commitment to the NAL Strategic Planning Process. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the American Poultry Historical Society for dedication and service in preserving poultry literature and maintaining the Poultry Industry Hall of Fame. Through his hard work and integrity, Ronnie’s career was consistent with purpose and inspiration for those around him.

Ronnie was a loving father and grandfather, always ready with helpful words, a listening ear, or a helpful hand. His legacy of love and devotion to his family will live on in the lives he touched.

Ronnie was passionate about martial arts and boxing, achieving a 3rd degree black belt in Judo. He was a huge fan of the Washington Commanders NFL Football Team. He also loved to travel, experiencing different cultures and places around the world during his military service and beyond.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Erma Hollingsworth Young, and his brothers, Stephen R. Young and Kelvin W. Young.

Ronnie is survived by one daughter, Lanita Gaye Moore (Peggy Moore) of Laurel; two sons, Arnold Blackston Young of Columbia and Donald Anthony Young of Laurel; four grandchildren, Raven Collins of Laurel, Russell Collins of Laurel, Gabriel Young of Burtonsville, and Cynthia Young of Seattle, Washington; one great-granddaughter, Sage Simone Slayton; and four sisters, Loretta J. Braxton (Young) of Bowie, Barbara L. Lewis (Young) of Bowie, Mildred A. Everett (Young) of Bowie, and Phyllis R. DesBordes (Young) of Pikesville. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends who will remember him fondly for his wisdom, humor, and the unwavering love he showed throughout his life.

Ronnie’s life was a testament to love and perseverance. Though he is no longer with us, his memory will continue to live on for all who knew him.

Interment will be held at National Harmony Memorial Cemetery, 7101 Sheriff Road, Hyattsville, MD, on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 12:00 pm noon. Services entrusted to Grace Murray Funeral Home, 5635 Eads Street NE, Washington, D.C. 20019
