Ronald's obituary
Ronald Ben Smith, age 77, of Belleville, Michigan, passed peacefully on October 29, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on March 24, 1948, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to the late Harriet (Dieter) and James Smith. The oldest of five children, Ron grew up in Belleville, where he built a lifetime of memories, friendships, and family ties that endured through the years.
Ron graduated from Belleville High School in 1966. A proud Army veteran, he was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. He enjoyed a long career as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in Ann Arbor, where his friendly smile, pocketful of dog treats, and sense of humor made him a favorite along his route.
In 1973, Ron married Beth (Hatcher) and together they shared 52 wonderful years. They raised three daughters- Rebecca, Nicole and Emily- and opened their hearts to Sammantha (Seth) Runyan and Chad Vanover, who became cherished members of the family. Ron was a devoted, loving grandfather and will be remembered for his playful nicknames, easy going demeanor, and for showing up- whether it was a fishing trip, ball game, or family milestone.
Known for his fun-loving spirit and generous heart, he lived for a good time with good people. A naturally athletic competitor, Ron enjoyed hockey, bowling, softball, golf, and never passed up a spirited game of cards. A loyal University of Michigan football fan, he cheered for the Wolverines through every season.
Ron enjoyed his Memorial weekend fishing trip, winter trips to Florida, and weekends at Greenwood Acres Campground where he made lifelong friends.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Beth (Hatcher); daughters Rebecca (Benjamin) Ross, Nicole (Frank) Murphy, and Emily Smith; grandchildren Alexis Mattingly, Kyler Emenalo, Maleya Smith, Ronan Murphy, Riley Smith, Emsley Smith, and Mason Smith; sisters Lisa (Joe) James and Cherie (Gary) Gordon; Mack Pinson who was like a brother; also many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jesse Smith and Mark Smith.
Though not religious, Ron was a believer— in kindness, in laughter, and in facing life’s challenges with strength and humor. His fighting spirit carried him through every obstacle, and he leaves behind countless stories, laughter, and memories that will be cherished forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Ron by sharing a favorite memory, enjoying a round of golf, or spending time with those you love— just as he always did.
