Carol's obituary

In Loving Memory of Romayne “Carol” Shovein

Carol Shovein, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on August 21, 1941, in Beloit, Wisconsin, to Roma and Carl Swanson, Carol was the eldest of three children (Gary and Don). Her early years were marked by a love of exploration, as her family moved across the country, igniting a passion for travel that shaped her life.

Carol’s adventurous spirit led her to a coveted career as a stewardess, where she soared the skies and embraced new horizons. A chance blind date introduced her to Don Shovein, her soulmate, and their love blossomed into a joyful marriage. Together, they built a strong family, raising their children—Marshall, Laura, Phil, and Matt—with warmth and devotion. Her interests included her Swedish heritage, expert-level quilt making, sewing, baking and serving for several charitable organizations. One endeavor led them to help clean up for hurricane victims in Texas. Another focus came from the Stephens Ministry program, where they comforted patients and families going through crisis, while in hospitals. Their most favored adventure led them to Sitka, Alaska, where they renovated a church. The two of them explored places all around the world, including several countries in Asia, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, and more.

The Shovein family called Minnesota and later Texas home, where Carol’s social butterfly personality forged lasting friendships with ease, often lingering after Lutheran church services to connect with others

Carol’s legacy lives on through her children, Marshall, Laura, Phil, and Matt; her cherished grandchildren, Reid, Elise, and Chris; and her surviving brothers, Gary and Don. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don Shovein, and her parents, Roma and Carl Swanson. Her infectious laughter, boundless kindness, and unwavering love touched countless lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association to support research and prevention efforts, reflecting Carol’s courageous and graceful battle with dementia.

Carol’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
