Rolando's obituary
Rolando Bernal (1931–2026)
A Cuban Political Hero and Patriarch
Rolando Bernal, born in 1931, lived a life defined by courage, conviction, and deep love for his family, his country of birth, and the United States of America, which he admired as a symbol of freedom and democratic values. He passed away peacefully of old age in 2026, leaving a legacy as a devoted patriarch and a Cuban political hero whose sacrifices helped define a generation.
In 1963, at the age of 31, Rolando was sentenced by a Revolutionary Tribunal in Havana to twelve years of imprisonment for “crimes against the integrity and stability of the nation.” Official court records reveal that his true “crime” was opposing a totalitarian regime and resisting communist oppression at a time when dissent carried the constant threat of state retribution. Labeled a conspirator for his involvement in anti-communist civic resistance, Rolando proved instead to be a patriot—one who chose dignity over silence and freedom over fear.
Despite the years unjustly taken from him, Rolando never allowed bitterness to shape his spirit. After enduring political imprisonment, he rebuilt his life with humility and strength, earning respect for his integrity, tireless work ethic, and devotion to family. He held a profound appreciation for the United States, grateful for the freedoms it represents and the hope it offered to those forced to flee oppression. To his children and grandchildren, he was a source of wisdom and quiet resilience; to all who knew his story, he stood as living proof that moral courage can survive even the harshest repression.
