Roed's obituary

In Loving Memory of Roed Enrique Freeland

"Mahal Kita"

Roed Enrique Freeland, beloved father, educator, and community leader, passed away on September 16, 2025, in Spokane, Washington, at the age of 62, after a courageous three-year battle with metastatic cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 7, 1963, in Manila, Philippines, Roed moved to Spokane and graduated from Shadle Park High School. He earned an Associate of Arts from Spokane Community Colleges and a Bachelor of General Studies from Gonzaga University in 1992. Passionate about education and leadership, he later completed a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and received his Principal Certification from Gonzaga. At the time of his passing, he was pursuing a Doctor of Education degree at Washington State University.

Roed dedicated his life to education and service. He began as a science teacher and went on to serve as Assistant Principal at Shaw Middle School, North Central High School, and Salk Middle School. He also worked as a technology trainer for the Gates Foundation, served as Board President of the Northeast Youth Center, and was CEO of Freeland Investments. He shared his knowledge as an adjunct faculty member at Gonzaga University’s School of Education.

Roed is survived by his wife, Kristen, and their six children: Brian, Karianna, Richard, Kelsi, Nikolas, and Kyli. His daughter-in-law Daniela and grandchildren Ezekiel and Camila brought him immense joy. A proud Gonzaga Bulldog, Roed never missed a game and wore his Gonzaga gear faithfully. He often said he would be cheering from Heaven when they win their first national title.

He is also survived by his mother, Rosalinda, and sisters Wendy, Cynthia, and Belinda. He was preceded in death by his father Bruce, stepfather Bert, aunt Cynthia, and grandsons Silas and Luka.

Faith was central to Roed’s life. Raised Catholic, he later attended Colbert Presbyterian Church and more recently worshipped at Real Life Ministries.

Roed found joy in simple moments—gardening, cooking Filipino meals, fixing things around the house, or watching the 49ers play. But above all, he cherished time with his children.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 27, at Colbert Presbyterian Church (4211 E Colbert Rd, Colbert, WA):

Viewing: 2:00 p.m. (open casket)

Witness to the Resurrection Service: 3:00 p.m. (closed casket; all faiths welcome)

Celebration of Life Reception: 4:00–6:00 p.m., with Filipino food, shared memories, photos, and music

All friends, family, and colleagues are welcome to attend any part of the day to honor Roed’s life and legacy.

As Roed would say with a smile: “Go Zags!” May his memory bring comfort and continue to inspire all who knew him.
