Rodney's obituary
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, Rodney "Hot Rod/Runt" VanVleet, who left us on February 10, 2026. Born on September 15, 1964, Rodney made the most of his time with us, always leaving a lasting impression of warmth and humor.
Rodney was a man of many names, known as "Hot Rod" and "Runt" to his friends, but he preferred Rodney. He had an unmistakable personality that was best described as goofy, always making jokes and charming everyone he met. He was a lovable man who lived by the simple yet profound lesson of treating people how they wanted to be treated.
His favorite pastimes included deer hunting, fishing, and enjoying his favorite foods such as deer meat and turkey gizzards. Rodney was an ardent fan of Johnny Cash, particularly the song "Folsom Prison Blues", and he enjoyed watching TV shows such as "Walker, Texas Stranger" and "Mash". His favorite movies included "Sling Blade" and Johnny Cash movies. Despite loving these activities, his favorite place remained at home, spending time with his children and grandchildren. Blue was his color of choice, reflecting the depth and tranquility of his personality.
Rodney leaves behind his daughters Amanda Merkle, Ashley VanVleet, and Danyell VanVleet; his son, Dawston VanVleet; and his grandchildren Thomas Dezarae&Ashlin Lower of battle creek Destiny & Alayna Merkle of Colon Mi, Aaliyah,A’lonna ,and Brayden Lewis all of Battle Creek He is also survived by his sister Laurie Slagle of Battle Creek, a sister, Amber VanVleet of Lansing his twin brother Raymond VanVleet& Crystal Wood, of Battle Creek and his sister Iris/Bruce Longanecker,of Florida his ex-wife, Marie Palmer, of battle Creek and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Althea VanVleet; his siblings, Kathy Church and David Sims; his brothers-in-law, Randy Church and Rex Slagle; and his son-in-law, Thomas Lower.
Rodney’s legacy will be marked by his kindness. His children and grandchildren were some of his greatest accomplishments in life. He leaves behind a smile in each and every one of his children that will never be forgotten - a legacy that could never be erased. He will be immensely missed for his goofy, quirky jokes, his smile, and just the sound of his voice.
A funeral service for Rodney will be held on March 4th 2026, at 2:00PM at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, also a celebration will be held on a different date and location. As we gather to remember and celebrate his life, his enduring love will be reflected in our tears and laughter, reminding us all of how deeply he touched our lives.
