Rodney's obituary

Rodney William McMillan

August 14, 1959 – December 21, 2024

Rodney William McMillan was born on August 14, 1959, in Gary, Indiana. He was the fourth of seven brothers. Rodney professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and remained a devoted servant of the Lord throughout his life.

He graduated from Horace Mann High School in Gary, Indiana, with the Class of 1977. Rodney began his career at Inland Steel Mill. In the 1990s, he embraced a new chapter, relocating first to Minnesota and later to Seattle, Washington. In Seattle, Rodney pursued his passions as both a musician and a talented chef, blending his love for music and cooking. As a gifted jazz artist, he found joy in playing the saxophone and flute—sharing his sound and spirit with everyone who heard him.

In 2015, Rodney returned to his beloved hometown of Gary, Indiana, where he chose to retire and plant roots. Staying true to his longtime dream of owning a home in the place that shaped him, Rodney proudly purchased property in the city where his story began. His return was more than a homecoming—it was a full-circle moment, grounded in love for his community and his commitment to legacy.

Rodney passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his loving stepfather, James McMillan; his mother, Gertie Tardy; and his brothers, Darrel McMillan, Gerald McMillan, and Vequella “Squeaky” McGowan.

He is survived by his daughter, Rodneisha Elois McMillan, and her children: granddaughters Xiyanna Larkin, Nyairah Webster, and La'Riyah Sellers, and grandsons Joseph Maceo Webster Jr., Jahmari Webster, and Yahmir Sellers. He is also survived by his brothers: Michael McMillan, Eric (Jamie) McGowan, and Arthur “Moosey” Green.

Rodney leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, music, and creativity. His warmth, talent, and generous spirit left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him. He will forever live on in our memories, our music, and our hearts.
