Rod's obituary
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Rodney "Rod" Smith, born in 1946. A man of simple tastes yet gentle kindness, Rod was better known for his loyalty and grounded persona, besides his introverted nature. He found contentment and joy within his sphere, surrounded by the things and people he loved.
Among his trove of cherished books, Westerns and works about World War II had a special place. He tuned into the melodies of Roy Orbison and remained an avid fan of the TV show The Big Bang Theory and Breaking Bad, which he binge watched more than once.
Rod, a dedicated supporter of the Calgary Flames, found pleasure in watching hockey, golf, and football games. His favorite pastime was working on his model ships and playing games like Fortnite on his computer. He held a fondness for road trips to the Rockies and looked forward to his cruising vacations to Hawaii and the Caribbean islands.
A doting husband, Rod cherished his beloved wife of 34 years, Angela Smith (nee Williams) who survives him, as well as a brother Lawrence Smith, a sister Gail White, 2 Stepdaughters Dawn and Carrie, 8 step Granddaughters Tiffany, Samina, Sara, Maryam, Zaina, Saffa, Asiya and Firdaus and one Step Great Granddaughter Mckayla. He was the loving son of the late Cecil and Margaret Smith who predeceased him.
Rod was a long time employee of Shaw GMC and made many friends at work through the years. Thoughtful, kind, loyal, and down-to-earth, Rod's legacy is one of kindness. His favorite color, blue, seemed to symbolize his personality - calm and composed.
Though Rod didn't have a favorite piece of art, he was, in essence, an artist- the art of his life being one of simple fulfillment and contentment. Known for his kindness and loyalty, Rod's life echoes the sentiment that happiness comes from cherishing the simple things in life.
