Roberta Ada McNulty Temple was born in Portland, Maine on May 19, 1924. She & her parents: Robert Gleason McNulty & Ada Mae Rossborough McNulty traveled for about 5 years before they settled in Virginia where they had a small farm. Roberta was the apple of her Daddy's eye. She spoke of him with fondness often. She eventually had 2 siblings: Constance Helen McNulty & Scott McNulty. The family moved to Rutherford, NJ after her father died suddenly of pneumonia. Roberta & her siblings lived at her father's parent's house. Her mother went to work in NYC. Roberta helped with her younger siblings. She met her husband, Walter D. Temple Jr. when she was ice skating with her friends & siblings on Jan. 1st 1943. They were married that June. She worked in the "war effort" as a draftsman. She raised her two daughters: Prudence & Constance in Old Greenwich, CT. While living there Roberta (known by all as "Bobbie") participated in many worthwhile activities: Girl Scout leader, Deaconess at the 1st Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, Sunday School Teacher at the same church, served on the town council of Old Greenwich. She supported the Republican Party all of her life. She loved volunteering at the "Summer Vacation Bible School". She always had a small vegetable garden. She finally learned to drive when she 30 years old & would drive her Girl Scout Troop to camp & other events. Her hobbies included: playing a mean game of bridge, square dancing, sewing & mending clothes, painting & boating of all sorts(canoeing, sailing, rowing). She loved going to the family home on Lake George in Pilot Knob, NY where she would meet up with her brother & sister & aunts & uncles & cousins. The reason that her husband "came to Christ" was due to her efforts. She was a Christian & showed it in the way she lived her life every day.

Roberta's mother was Ada Mae Rossborough. The family homestead of the Rossborough's is still (supposedly ) intact. Ada Rossborough married Robert Alexis MacNulty and they had 3 children. Their eldest child was my mother, Roberta Ada MacNulty (note: they used both of their names when they named her) then there was Connie (Constance)MacNulty. I'm named after her. Then, the youngest child was: Scott Alexis MacNulty. The family moved to Virginia so that Robert MacNulty could work in Washington, DC and have a small farm as well. Ada and her 3 children did not have Robert with them for very long. My mother lost her father at the young age of 9 years old. Robert (her father) died of pneumonia. When her father died the children were put on a train to go and live with their father's mother in Rutherford, NJ. Their father's casket also was put onto that train. I don't know if an adult accompanied them on the train. I suppose someone did go with the children. Their father's mother was: Edna Dwight Leeds MacNulty. Ada stayed behind briefly in Virginia to sell the farm and the animals. Grandma MacNulty(Edna) was partially disabled with problems in her legs. She stayed with my mother, Roberta, Connie & Scott while my Grandmother, Ada Rossborough MacNulty, went to work. Ada took the train every weekday to NYC to work at the main branch of the Marine Midland Bank. She was a secretary there. Eventually she was the private secretary to the Vice President of Marine Midland Bank, Charles Pharis. Ada later married Charles Pharis after her youngest child, Scott, graduated from high school. My grandmother was always very clear that she NEVER even kissed or had any physical contact with her boss, Charles Pharis until they were married. In the meantime, my mother took care of her younger brother and sister with Grandma MacNulty helping as well. I'm sure some of the other family members helped out, too. Grandma MacNulty had several adult children: Harold MacNulty, Donald MacNulty, Helen MacNulty, & Ruth MacNulty King. My father, Walter Dilts Temple Jr. met my mother at an outdoor ice skating rink in Rutherford, NJ. She was still a senior at Rutherford High School. He had already graduated. There was a brief courtship & then marriage. (World War II did that for alot of the young people at that time.) My mother worked for the"war effort" as a "draftsman"....side by side with many other women. I met many of these women(her friends) who were the "Rosie the Riveters" of their area. I remember my mother saying they(my father and she) lived briefly in a super small army cabin: 2 couples per cabin, 2 front doors, small kitchen/LR area & a tiny bathroom. She said you could hear every word of the other couple. It was located somewhere near the Army base in New Jersey. She spoke of those times fondly (even though there were hardships due to the close quarters).
These photos are old but still in good shape. The oldest photo is of my mother, Roberta Ada MacNulty when she is about 11 years old. It was just after her father died. Taken at Lake George (Pilot Knob) NY. The next one is taken on Easter in Grandma MacNulty's home in Rutherford, NJ. My mother, Roberta, is next to her mother, Ada MacNulty then my mother's younger brother, Scott Alexis, then my mother's younger sister, Constance (Connie).
The photo of my mother, my father, Walter Dilts Temple Jr. , my sister, Prudence Anne Temple, and me (the baby) is taken in the side yard of their home at Pilot Knob, NY in April 1950.
The group of women with aprons is taken Christmas 1966. Pine Orchard, CT. Roberta is in between her two daughters and Roberta's mother, Ada Rossborough MacNulty Pharis is on the far left.
