Robert's obituary

On Tuesday, May 12, 2020, Robert Franklin Sheard, Sr., loving husband and father of seven children passed away at age 81 shortly before his 82nd birthday.

Robert was born May 15, 1938 in Catron, MO to Calvin and Elzena Sheard. He married Mattie Malone, May 28, 1959, and raised seven children: Deborah (Isaiah) West, Robert (Tonja) Sheard, Jr., Marvin (Dorothy) Sheard, Alvin (Jean) Sheard, Tresa (Randy) Sullivan, Ruth [Rena] (Tommy) Dicus, Felecia[Lisa](Jonathan) Parks.

Robert became a preacher to honor his calling from the Lord. He served as Assistant Pastor for North Sixth Street (Griffin’s Temple) Church of God in Christ for numerous years, before founding Israel of God Church in Hayti, MO with Mattie. Robert is well known for his charitable efforts and his faithfulness to the Lord and community. Robert never turned away a person in a crisis. He was the first person many people in the surrounding area turned to in their time of need. He provided food, clothing, shelter, and financial assistance, as well as spiritual guidance. He was a faithful husband and loving father who served God until his very last breath. Robert took care of others all of his life. As a young man, he provided for his father, half-sister, her family and two nephews all before he was ever married. He was a role model for adults and children in his hometown of Hayti and the surrounding area. He was a source of inspiration for local and regional preachers and townspeople alike. Robert was always jovial and had something humorous to say in almost every occasion. He shared his joy of living with all he knew, and his smile and happiness were contagious. He enjoyed fishing and hunting until he was unable to do so. He was never at a loss for words. People may not have always liked what he had to say, but everyone respected him, because they knew he was, indeed, a man of God. I can say of a certainty, Robert will be welcomed in heaven.

Robert was both a highly skilled and prolific welder whose skills were highly sought. He applied the same zeal and tenacity he had for God’s word to his work. He believed in doing everything to the best of his ability.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Calvin, his mother, Elzena, his brothers Calvin, Jr., James, his sisters, Dorothy Lee, and Annie Pearl, half-sisters Ruth, and Mildred, half-brothers Gene, Roy, and David, and his step-grandson, Drake Love, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Mattie and all of their children, his brother Edward, half-brothers Albert and Frank, (grandchildren: DeRhonda Sheard, Miriah West, Juan Walton Jr., Jeremy Sheard, Tiffany De la Questa, Tyler Sheard, Brandon Covington, Brian Covington, Dominique Love, Kimberly Brown, Emmanuel Sheard, Tony Sheard, Maurice Winda, Phobe Johnson, Kisha Winda, Shenika Tucker, Quincy Sheard, Myles Sullivan, Cameron Sullivan, Krystal Dicus, Joshua Dicus, Adam Dicus, Hannah Dicus, Nikki Parks, Jonathan Parks, Jr., Chris Parks, Travis Sheard, Kelsey Parks, and a host of great-grandchildren, Nephews he raised Eddie (John) and Robert Earl, neighbor, Rhonda Nolen; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members, all whom he loved dearly.
